Propolis is the names given to a variety of resinous substances that bees gather and
use to fill any cracks or hole in their hive. They also smear it on the wall and combs
and use bit to completely coat any foreign, bodies that are big for them to eject from
the hive, such as moth, small rodents, lizards etc.
v The bee uses its mandibles and its forelegs to gather plant resins.
v Some races of bee build fortifications of proplis at the entrance making defense
easy, and probably helping to control temperature inside the hive; this is probably the
origin of the world propolis literally in front of the city.
Composition of propolisIt is impossible to give a simple table of the composition of propolis as it is such a
complex substance. Two hundred components have already bee identified among the most
interesting are various forms of alcohal, amino, acids, and aromatic esters, nflavones
and flavonoids, fatty acids, terpenes, sterols and numerous carbohydrates in variety
of forms as well as sugars…
Of particular interest is the presence of antibiotic substances. The antibiotic activity
however varies greatly depending on the source.
